YUKO IZAWA | GUEST TATTOO ARTIST

Yuko Izawa is a multidisciplinary artist whose work weaves together the traditions of Japanese Irezumi, American and Mexican tattoo culture, and the quiet luminosity of watercolor painting. Born in Japan, she began studying calligraphy at the age of seven and earned her instructor’s license by twelve. Under a calligrapher who was also a painter, she was introduced to the worlds of sumi-e and watercolor, forming the foundation of her lifelong artistic practice.

Yuko Izawa blends the disciplined elegance of calligraphy with the expressive traditions of multicultural tattoo techniques. Trained across Japan, Mexico, and California, she brings a refined, unique approach to Tina’s Ink, creating tattoos that honor both personal story and artistic lineage.

While working as a pharmacist, Yuko encountered the legendary first-generation Horikuni as a patient. This meeting transformed her path. She trained under Horikuni after work, studying the discipline, philosophy, and aesthetics of traditional Japanese tattooing. After his passing, she continued to refine her craft while working as a pharmacist in Okinawa, studying American neo-traditional tattooing under Gate2 Maiky.

Her artistic journey expanded internationally:

• Mexico — apprenticed under Doctor Danger

• California — trained with Yabuse

These experiences allowed her to blend Japanese Irezumi, American Neo-Traditional, and Mexican tattoo influences into a distinctive, multicultural style.

In addition to tattooing, Yuko is an active watercolor artist. Her paintings are exhibited in galleries in Albuquerque, and her greeting cards are carried by Santa Fe shops including Doodlet’s and ArtfulTea. Her visual language is shaped by calligraphy’s disciplined line, watercolor’s softness, and the narrative sensibility of her multicultural background.

Yuko is deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with Tina’s Ink Tattoo Gallery and for the trust and mentorship offered by owner Kristina Tafoya. This new chapter allows her to bring her cross‑cultural artistic heritage to the community of New Mexico.

Artistic Approach

Yuko’s tattoo work is defined by:

• A fusion of Japanese irezumi and Western tattoo traditions

• Elegant linework rooted in calligraphy

• Watercolor-inspired softness and atmospheric color

• A sensitivity to personal history, healing, and transformation

Her practice is guided by the belief that tattooing is both an art and a form of emotional restoration. Each piece is created with respect for the client’s story, body, and cultural identity
